Little Butt a.k.a. Riťka, Baby Girl, The Princess…
My senior golden retriever girl was born on August 16th, 2006, and she’s been with me since she was 2 months old. She’s my baby, my best friend, and driving me nuts daily. I will never tire of her shenanigans, although she mostly sleeps now.
This rather spry 13-year-old Golden Girl is still loving life, can’t get enough of swimming, and keeps coming up with interesting new projects to work on in our back yard. Okay, it’s mostly sticks and pine cones but she says she chews them in new, original ways.
Little Butt is definitely not a crazy, wild puppy anymore but even in her wild days, she was actually very chill. The day we came to pick her up from the breeder, my friend and I immediately dubbed her The Intellectual when we saw her quietly reading a book chewing a stick about 20 feet from the rest of her siblings, all wrestling in a big, rowdy pile of fluff.
That calm, quiet nature of her was why I chose her in the first place. I wanted a chance at raising a therapy dog if she was interested. And she turned out to be a natural! Huge people-lover, this one.
Originally from Slovakia, where she lived until she was almost 10, Little Butt is a world-traveler and adventurer. I wouldn’t take her with me whenever I went out shopping or whatever, but those road trips through Scandinavia and Finland were right up her alley. So much snow! So many new people to befriend! We’ll do some reminiscing about the good old days.
Senior pets
Caring for senior pets can be very different from the care required by puppies or young dogs. It certainly comes with its own set of challenges, new needs, and adjustments. One thing to keep in mind is that your dog is a family member. My senior golden retriever may no longer be a good hiking buddy but that doesn’t mean she needs less fun time with her human.
In this part of my blog, I will be talking about the specifics of elderly pet care, reviewing products we find helpful, and sharing pictures and videos of my gracefully graying lady, with the occasional throwback to puppyhood/younger years.
